“A Rare Occurrence”

The sighting of a rare grey whale on the coast of Massachusetts at the time of painting prompted this work. Michael is inspired by the paintings of the 19th-century British artist JMW Turner, whose whaling is among his favorites. Paying homage to that work while the evocations of the sea and the majesty of the animals themselves are the subject.
